After a regular gym session, our group met for a quick coffee at our usual spot. As always, the conversations flowed — work updates, stock market chatter, a bit of friendly leg-pulling, and weekend plans. Just as we were about to leave, one friend casually said, “Let’s plan a jungle safari.” It felt spontaneous and exciting, but with everyone in a hurry, we simply parted ways — the idea lingering in the back of our minds.
Choosing the Destination: Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve
A few weekends later, we sat down seriously to brainstorm the best place for a wildlife safari in India. After much discussion and research, we finalised on Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve — a renowned tiger safari destination in central India, located close to Nagpur.
The location was perfect, offering easy access by train and flight. Plus, the newly built Samruddhi Mahamarg has made the drive from Mumbai or Pune to Nagpur a smooth 10–12-hour journey. Getting to Tadoba has never been easier!
Setting the Plan in Motion
We locked in the dates: 30th April to 2nd May 2022. Although summers in central India are scorching — with temperatures soaring up to 48°C — it’s actually the best time for tiger sightings. Natural water sources dry up, and animals, especially tigers, often gather near man-made waterholes.
We booked our Tadoba safari permits well in advance. (Tip: Always plan at least 90 days ahead — safaris fill up super fast during peak season!)
Gearing Up for the Adventure
Finally, the day arrived. Bags packed, camera batteries charged, lightweight earthy-toned clothes ready — we were all set. Both a friend and I are passionate about wildlife photography in India, so you can imagine our excitement.
The classic song lyric played in my head: “All my bags are packed and I’m ready to go…” We gathered at my place, loaded up the cars, and set off — hearts pounding with the thrill of the unknown.
Arrival in Nagpur and Journey to Tadoba
We reached Nagpur by around 6 PM, checked into our hotel, grabbed an early dinner, and called it a night — saving energy for the adventure ahead.
The next morning, after picking up a friend arriving by train, we couldn’t resist a quick pit stop to try Nagpur’s famous Tarri Pohe — a spicy, flavourful breakfast that’s a must-try!
Bellies full, we began our drive toward Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, heading to Chimur Taluka, where our safari zones were booked. Here’s how our plan looked:
• Day 1 (Afternoon Safari): Madnapur Zone
• Day 2 (Morning Safari): Shirkheda Zone
• Day 2 (Afternoon Safari): Alizanza Zone
• Day 3 (Morning Safari): Kolara Core Zone
Each zone promised its own wild surprises.

Day 1: Safari at Madnapur Zone
We reached the Madnapur gate buzzing with excitement. After unpacking our camera gear, verifying permits, and paying camera fees, we were ready.
Tip: Mobile phones aren’t allowed inside Tadoba. Carry a point-and-shoot or a vlog camera!
With our driver and guide assigned, we entered the forest. Dry forests, bamboo thickets, and grassy meadows stretched ahead. The guide shared thrilling tales of Matkasur, Tadoba’s legendary tiger. He had been spotted that morning near a waterhole — and we immediately set course.
As we waited, monkeys played around — alert, cautious. Suddenly, a sharp alarm call echoed through the forest.
And then, Matkasur appeared.
He walked calmly to the waterhole, drank deeply, and settled into the pond to cool off. Cameras clicked non-stop. Seeing a wild tiger so close and so relaxed gave us chills. After about 20 minutes of pure magic, he disappeared back into the forest.
Our Tadoba jungle safari was off to a roaring start!

Day 2: Morning Safari – Shirkheda Zone
We set off early for our morning safari, hopeful under the golden sunrise. Shirkheda Zone is known for its peaceful landscapes and serene lakes — a dream for photographers.
But today, the jungle had other plans. No alarm calls.
No deer. No movement. Just the raw, untouched silence of nature.
While it wasn’t the most thrilling safari, it reminded us — in the jungle, you aren’t guaranteed a show. Some days you chase sightings; some days you simply breathe in the beauty.
We headed back for lunch, resting up for the afternoon safari.
Day 2: Afternoon Safari – Alizanza Zone: A Dream Called Babli
Our spirits lifted again as we entered the Alizanza Zone, buzzing with hopes of a sighting. Just a few minutes into the drive, we noticed several gypsies parked near a waterhole. Our driver skilfully positioned us nearby — eyes wide, hearts racing.
Hidden in the bushes, a tiger rested.
At first, we couldn’t tell — male or female? But we knew the golden rule: Patience always pays off in the jungle.
After nearly an hour, she stirred — and Babli emerged. A young, bold tigress with her first litter.
As she came out to drink, we watched in silent awe. Cameras clicked, but honestly, for a moment, I forgot about photos. I was just… mesmerised.
Then came a moment straight out of a dream. Babli walked straight toward us.
At one point, she was so close, our 150–600mm lens struggled to frame her! It was thrilling, nerve-wracking, and so emotional — a heart-pounding mix of fear, excitement, and pure wonder.
Even after she disappeared into the forest, our guide smartly rerouted — and soon enough, Babli reappeared, giving us a perfect head-on sighting. Those 30 minutes felt suspended in time — a once-in-a-lifetime memory that we will cherish forever.

Day 3: Morning Safari – Kolara Core Zone
Our final safari was a canter safari from the Kolara Gate — an open bus perfect for groups.
Within minutes, the canter screeched to a halt — “Bhaloo! Bhaloo!” everyone shouted. A Sloth Bear crossed the road ahead. We caught a fleeting glimpse before it disappeared, too quick for a photo, but exciting nonetheless.
Driving along scenic Tadoba Lake, we spotted alligators, raptors soaring overhead, and herds of grazing deer.
Just as we were about to end the safari, Bijli, a sub-adult female tiger (daughter of the famous Choti Tara), was spotted resting on a hill. We managed a few final shots — a beautiful way to wrap up the adventure.
With hearts full and memory cards packed, we began our return journey to Pune — ending an unforgettable Tadoba jungle safari experience.

Final Thoughts
Some safaris gift you sights. Some teach you patience. But every safari gifts you stories — and this Tadoba trip gave us plenty to treasure.
From the mighty Matkasur to the magical encounter with Babli, every moment reaffirmed why the wild calls to our soul.
If you’re planning your first Tadoba safari — gear up, stay patient, trust your guide, and let the jungle work its magic.
